Can Life’s Storms be Used for Good?
A SHORT REFLECTION FROM OUR FOUNDER
After hearing a church sermon about the story of Jonah, it became clear to me that Jonah’s was the right name for the seafood restaurant I was developing. Like the prophet himself, my own journey has not been straight or easy.
When Jonah ran from God’s calling, a great storm threatened his ship. Thrown into the sea, he was saved—not punished—by a great fish. In that place of struggle, Jonah was humbled, changed, and restored. What began as resistance became surrender, and through that surrender, Jonah was ultimately used to bring an entire city to repentance.
In much the same way, my own storms have shaped me. Losing my mother, surviving cancer, and facing the consequences of poor choices, each “whale” drew me into surrender, formed humility, and strengthened my resolve. This ultimately led me toward purpose and vision.
Jonah’s Fish & Grits was created during those years, not merely as a restaurant, but as a place where the Holy Spirit is welcome, where families gather, and where life is celebrated.
We all face storms. We all run at times. But no matter how far we go, there is always forgiveness and a way home through Jesus Christ. My prayer is that you leave refreshed, encouraged, and reminded that God still redeems stories, one life at a time.
